Permit Pipi
By Craig Jenkins

The Pipi fly was designed with Permit in mind, pipi's are a major part of the Cape York Permit's diet. Permit feed in schools digging up sand looking for the shellfish this is the time to have this fly in the water, working the fly with short 2 inch strips. The fly is designed with a lead eye placed to the back of the fly to make the fly more buoyant at the front this makes the fly attempt to stand between strips making it look like the pipi's trying to bury itself back in the sand, like it's alive.

Hook: Mustad 34007 # 2- 2/0
Body: Deer hair
Flash:nil
Eyes: lead eyes
Thread: Flat waxed nylon
Glue: Super strength epoxy

To start, set your hook in the vice with the hook pointing down. Tie in the lead eye's at the back of your hook just before the hook starts to bend towards the point, add a drop of epoxy.

You can disguise the lead eye's by dipping the eye's in epoxy then covering them in sand before adding them to your fly.

Turn over the hook add the coarse deer hair a small amount at a time. Spin the deer hair like you would for a dalhberg. Line up a small amount of less coarse material to cover the tip of the hook point this will imitate the tongue of the pipi. On this fly I have use brown deer hair so it is easier to see.

Continue spinning the coarse deer hair along the hook shank, the tighter the better, all the way up to the hook point.

Whip finish at the hook point.
Remove fly from the vice and trim to shape. Be careful to leave the small tuft of material (the tongue) to cover the hook point. Once finished add a drop of epoxy on to the whip finish.
