The White Thing
By Craig Jenkins
Barramundi

The “White Thing” is a simplified version of the Pink Thing, another great Aussie fly. The White Thing has earned a place in my fly box it’s a great Barra producer on the beach, it has an excellent hook up rate with the hook riding under the fly. I also tied the fly using lead eyes of varied sizes to weight the fly’s according to the depth of water to be fished.
As most of my fly tying, I like to use the KISS principal, Kept It Simple Stupid. Being a guide out in the sticks, I normally need to make many flies fast and with basic material.

Hook: Mustad C68S SS or similar # 1 - 4/0.
Body: White saddle hackles.
Flash: Pearl krystal flash & pearl flashabou.
Eyes: Stain steel beaded chain eyes or lead eyes are great.
Thread: Flat waxed nylon
Glue: Super strength epoxy

Tie in hackles to the end of the hook shank, four hackle on each side. Make sure that hackles are around the same length as well as have a similar natural curve.

Add a small amount of krystal flash & Flashabou. A small amount of epoxy.

Find two thick webbed hackles, there is normally quit a few in you saddle hackles. Tie them just in front of the last hackle you had tied in.

Run you fingers down both sides on the hackles to separate the webbing. Wind the hackles around the shank working your way to the eye of the hook keeping it tight. Tie and trim off at the end. It should now look like this.

Tie in beaded chain eyes, after few wraps to secure the eyes, I like to wipe a small amount of epoxy to the thread then wrap the eyes in tight. Whip finish and the fly done.
