 Jack Slammer

Mangrove Jack

Jack Slammer was originally designed to target Mangrove Jacks, I needed a fly that would be snag resistant. Allowing the fly to be fished right up into snags where the bigger Jacks hang out. These areas have low light levels so I added a grizzly hackle for contrast. The lead eye is placed well back along the hook shank this allows the fly to sink horizontally, which resembles a prawn. I have found this fly to be equally at home on the beach, especially if there is a rock or two about.


Hook: Mustad 34007 # 1 - 4/0
Body: Buck tail & 2 grizzly hackles
Flash: Pearl Krystal flash & pearl flashabou.
Eyes: Painted lead eyes
Thread: Flat waxed nylon
Glue: Super strength epoxy

Place eye of your hook into the fly vice to bend the hook shaft as you would for a bend back fly the bend should be slight almost unnoticeable.

Remove the hook from the vice, turn the hook around and place the tip of the hook in the vice. Tie the lead eye on the top of the hook, note how far back the lead eye are fixed to the hook this is where this fly gets unique action. The lead eyes should be tied on the hook shank inline with the hook point. After a couple of wraps place a drop of the epoxy in between the eyes and wrap in tight.

Once more remove the hook and turn it over. Take the thread up to the eye of the hook.

Tie in some white buck tail then dark green on top.

A grizzly hackle on each side and a few strands of krystal flash & flashabou on the top. Whip finish and add a drop of epoxy to finish.

Try varying the colures that work in your area, here is one in all white, probably the best all round fly you could use in Weipa.
